A former prep standout at Park High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, Hawkins went to UTEP in 2018, before leaving that program for Maryland.

Still a freshman next fall, Hawkins will have three years of eligibility remaining, beginning with the 2020 season.

In high school, Hawkins emerged as a strong pro-style passer, throwing for 54 touchdowns during his career.

As a senior in 2017, Hawkins passed for 2,878 yards and 23 touchdowns.
