After a week off, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns are back in action this week against the Zips of the University of Akron out of the Mid-American Conference.  The Cajuns had last week off, while Akron won their first game of the season, beating Savannah State.

The Cajuns are 8.5 point favorites in the game.  If they are going to go to Ruston with a 2-1 record next week, here are some things that could propel them.

  1.  Take advantage of the back end—Akron has done a good job against the run in their games so far.  Their front four has done a solid job and the linebackers are the strength of their defense.  The Cajuns need to run the ball well enough to keep the linebackers close, which will open up some things in the secondary, where Akron is very undersized
  2. Take Hundley out of the game—While the Akron running back hasn’t put up incredible numbers, he is averaging seven yards per carry.  Keying on him and making his yards difficult will pay dividends.
  3. Practice containment—After veteran Kyle Pohl was injured, Akron has had musical chairs at quarterback.   Thomas Woodson may not have the happy feet of Tra’von Chapman, but both quarterbacks are a threat to run.  Make em throw it.  They don’t want to.
  4. Time for the D to get T’s—One think the Cajuns’ defense hasn’t been able to do is force turnovers.  While being well on the plus side may not be a prerequisite for victory, it’s time for the Cajuns’ defense to show they can get takeaways.  That will help them going into next week when they will HAVE to get those turnovers for the Cajuns to have a chance.
  5. Make em drive it---Akron is going to have issues with long drives during the game.  Stay away from the big play and flip field position whenever you have the chance.  The more they start from inside their 30, the better things will go for Louisiana.
