This one came out of the blue.

Mario Cristobal, who took a winless and fragmented FIU football program to a Sun Belt championshp and two bowl games, has been fired by the University after six seasons.

Cristobal inherited an 0-12 football team and won only one game his first year.  But his squad won a share of the SBC championship in 2010 and made it to a bowl in 2011.

But this year, FIU was a huge disappointment.  The Panthers, picked to win the league before the season, went through an eight game losing streak and finished 3-9.

It was just a year ago that Cristobal spurned offers from other schools, including Rutgers to stay at the Miami school.  FIU played three games without their starting quarterback Jake Medlock this year.

This is the Panthers' final year in the Sun Belt before moving to Conference USA next year.
