Tampa Bay Buccaneers guard Carl Nicks has been placed on injured reserve, thus ending his season. The All-Pro suffered a torn plantar plate in his left toe, requiring surgery.

In the offseason, Tampa Bay made Nicks the highest paid guard in NFL history, giving him $47.5 million over 5 years. A two-time pro bowler with the New Orleans Saints, Nicks is widely regarded as the best offensive guard in football.

The loss of Nicks is a stunning blow to the Bucs. Making matters worse, Tampa Bay already lost fellow starting guard David Joseph in the preseason.
