Cajuns Rally Past Southern, 5-4

Before Wednesday niight's game with Southern, Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball coach Tony Robichaux referred to the contest as a "trap game"

The Cajuns managed to elude the trap.

Trailing 4-0, the Cajuns erupted for five runs in the sixth inning and the Louisiana bullpen made the lead stand up as the Cajuns defeated the Jaguars 5-4 at M. L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

Southern (13-19) got to Cajuns' starter Eric Carter in the third inning when Marcus Hodge led off with a bunt single and was sacrificed to second.  After taking third on a wild pitch, Hodge scored on a single by Lance Jones to give Southern a 1-0 lead.  It quickly became 3-0 when the next hitter, Tyler Kirksey, deposited a Carter offering over the right field wall.

Southern added a run in the fifth, but it could have been worse.  Marcus Tomlin led off the inning with a single and then, with one out, Jose De La Torre hit a ball over the head of right fielder Dylan Butler to apparently score Tomlin with the fourth run.  But Tomlin was ruled out on appeal after missing second base and De La Torre was only credited with a fielder's choice.  Gavin Webster brought home the run with a double, but the score was just 4-0.

That play proved to be the difference in the game.

In the Cajuns' sixth, J/Markus George, who had a allowed just three base runners through the first five innings, hit Cajuns' DH Jam Williams with a pitch and walked Blake Trahan.  Kyle Clement scored Williams with a single to left and Stefan Trosclair singled off reliever Harold Miles (0-3), scoring Trahan.  The hit extended Trosclair's current hitting streak to ten games.  Dylan Butler then walked to load the bases.  Greg Davis struck out, but Clement scored when the ball got away from De La Torre to bring the Cajuns within a run.  Evan Powell then singled off the glove of Rivers Frederick to plate Trosclair and Butler to give Louisiana (25-15) the lead for good.

Logan Stoelke (1-1), who got the final out of the sixth inning, allowed one hit over the next two innings and turned it over to Dylan Butler, who pitched a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save of the season.

Louisiana now turns its attention back to Sun Belt play as they entertain UT Arlington in a three game conference series beginning Friday at 6pm.
