John Bormann’s RBI single highlighted a three run fifth inning as UT San Antonio defeated the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns 8-5 at Roadrunner Field Friday night in the season opener for both schools.

C. J. Pickering led off the fifth with a single off Cajuns’ starter Chris Charpentier (0-1).  Trent Bowles then doubled to left center to end the sophomore right hander’s night.  Leger relieved and struck out Kevin Markham, but then uncorked a wild pitch to score Pickering to tie the game 4-4.  Pinch hitter Geonte Jackson walked and Horatio Correa’s groundout tied the game.  Bormann’s hit gave UTSA a two run lead.

Louisiana got a run back in the sixth on a pinch hit RBI single by Kennan Fontenot, but that would be the last run of the game for the Cajuns.  UTSA added insurance runs in the sixth and eighth innings for the final margin.

UTSA (1-0) got on the board in the first inning on a leadoff homer by Kevin Markham, but the Cajuns took the lead in the third on an RBI single by Greg Davis and a throwing error.  The lead lasted until the bottom of the fourth when Bormann hit a two run homer to help the Roadrunners regain the lead.

The Cajuns took regained the lead in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Tyler Girouard and a single by Kyle Clement before UTSA took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning.

Greg Davis had three hits to lead the Cajuns’ twelve hit attack, with Blake Trahan and Nick Thurman adding two hits apiece.  Bormann had three hits and four RBI for UTSA.  The Roadrunners had eleven hits in the contest.

The two teams will play game two of the series Saturday afternoon at 2pm
