Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun softball team beat Alabama two out of three last weekend behind a number of impressive performances, including that of junior shortstop DJ Sanders (pictured above) and freshmen pitcher Alyssa Denham.

“This is a testament to, not only these two kids’ hard work, but the entire group for how hard they continue to work,” Louisiana Ragin' Cajun head softball coach Mike Lotief said in a press release. “Even after having some adversity, and struggle, our kids continue to show resolve to work hard and get better.”

Sanders hit two home runs in Sunday's win over the Tide to cap off a great weekend for the Columbia, Mississippi native. In the two wins over Alabama, Sanders went 4-7 at the plate with 4 RBI.

For her efforts, Sanders was named the Sun Belt Conference player of the week.

“DJ knows what the grind is and we as a community and softball team understand that she’s going to hit her stride,” Lotief said. “We know what her talent level is and that when she starts to gain confidence she is going to have a great season in front of her.”

Joining DJ with a weekly conference honor is Denham.

The 6'2 freshmen from Alvin, Texas tossed a shutout, allowing only 2 hits in Sunday's series clinching victory over the 4th ranked Tide.

After allowing only 5 hits in 12 innings of work last weekend, Denham was named Sun Belt Conference pitcher of the week.

"Individual awards are hard to put in context without looking at the entire team,” Lotief explained. “I think Alyssa’s success as a true freshman – who was not very highly recruited or decorated – is not only a testament to her hard work, but to the structure, system and her sisters around her. They have nurtured her, encouraged her and helped her to get better.”
