Breaux Bridge Wins 7-on-7 Tournament
The Breaux Bridge Tigers captured the Quick Slants Magazine 7-on-7 tournament title by defeating STM 16-14 in the championship game. The second annual tournament, which was played at St. Thomas More, was the final tune up for a majority of the 14 area teams that participated before they begin fall camp early next month.
The 7-on-7 title is coach Terry Martin’s second of the summer, but the first year Breaux Bridge coach knows participating in these types of tournaments isn’t just about winning. It’s just another training tool for he and his team to use as they get prepared for the upcoming campaign. While Martin is thrilled with the win, he came away more impressed with how his team is starting to pick up and understand the new offensive scheme.
“We’re finally starting to learn a little bit more of what we started in the spring” Martin said.
Martin who came to Breaux Bridge following a successful run at Cecilia is still playing catch up after major parts of his team missed spring ball. Between injuries and a semifinal playoff run by the baseball team Martin has been forced to install his offense this summer. He noted that Thursday guys were able to run the plays that were called without having to ask for some direction or clarity.
While the Tigers took home the title, there was still plenty of other eye popping action to get excited about. From STM’s 6’3” wide receiver Griffin Hebert catching passes from 6’8” quarterback Nate Cox or Carencro’s pint size Poullard twins wreaking havoc in the slot, to first year head coaches at Lafayette High, Cecilia, Vermilion Catholic installing new schemes and traditional run first teams such as Acadiana and Notre Dame putting on a strong showing in the passing competition. If Thursday night was just a glimpse of what is in store for football fans in Acadiana, everyone is in for a treat.
Football can't get here fast enough and thankfully, believe it or not, the season is right around the corner.
The 14 team tournament saw teams divided into four groups and play three games to determine seeding. Once the pool play portion of the evening was complete the teams began a single elimination tournament.
