The Houston Astros defeated the Kansas City Royals, 5-2, while the Texas Rangers slipped past the Toronto Blue Jays, 5-3, to take 1-0 leads in their respective American League Division Series'.

In Kansas City, the Astros jumped on top early, scoring two runs in the top half of the first inning, loading the bases with nobody out, and then getting groundout RBI's from Colby Rasmus and Evan Gattis:

In the top of the second, Jose Altuve extended the Astros' lead to 3-0, driving home Jake Marisnick from second with a run-scoring single:

The Royals cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom half of the second inning, courtesy of a solo home run off the bat of Kendrys Morales:

In the bottom half of the 4th inning, Morales was at it again, belting his second solo homer of the game, to trim the Houston lead to 3-2.

In the top of the fifth inning, it was the Astros' turn to play long ball, when George Springer homered, extending the Houston lead to 4-2:

The Astros added an insurance run, the final run of the game, in the top of the eighth inning, when Rasmus nailed a solo homer:

Game two will be Friday afternoon in Kansas City, with left-hander Scott Kazmir getting the start for the Astros, while right-hander Johnny Cueto will get the call for the Royals.
