Anthony Davis returned from a shoulder injury to put up a ridiculous stat line, leading his New Orleans Pelicans to a dramatic 88-85 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

The 21-year old franchise player finished Wednesday's win with 39 points, 13 rebounds, 8 blocks, 3 steals, 2 assists, and only 1 turnover.

"I'm just happy to be back on the floor," said Davis. "I told coach 'Don't take me out the game.' I had so much energy tonight. I just love being back on the floor with my teammates."

His teammates felt the same way.

"He's not human," said guard Norris Cole. "He's definitely not a human being."

Davis showed of all aspects of his game in the victory, something his head coach recognized.

"He just did it in so many ways," said Pelicans coach Monty Williams of Davis. "His ability to affect the game in so many ways says a lot about his talent and how hard he works at it."

With the exception of Davis, New Orleans struggled out the gate, turning the ball over and giving up transition buckets. Detroit had 19 first-half points in transition, giving them a 4 point edge at halftime.

Down the stretch, Davis nailed two mid-range jumpers to fend off the feisty Pistons.

"Our guys fought tonight," said Williams. "We beat a team that's much better than their record (23-37) indicates."

On defense, Davis' 8 blocks gives him 437 for his career, the new franchise record. It took him only 180 career games to reach it.

"It’s a blessing," said Davis when asked of the distinction. "In my third year, being a franchise holder in any stat is a blessing."

Tyreke Evans scored 21 for the Pels, adding 9 assists. Big man Alexis Ajinca came off the pine to chip in a double-double of 10 points and 11 boards.

With the victory, the Pelicans (33-28) have won 6 of their last 7, continuing their battle with the Oklahoma City Thunder (34-27) for the 8th seed in the Western Conference.

"We know what position we're in," noted Davis. "We know we're battling for the 8 spot. We're fighting and all these guys have a lot of heart."

Next up, the Pelicans host the Boston Celtics on Friday at the Smoothie King Center. Tip-off is set for 7:00.
