Less than a week after the passing of North Carolina's Dean Smith, another coaching great has passed away.

Jerry Tarkanian, known for his up-tempo style that won him a national title at UNLV, and who fought incessantly with the NCAA, died today after battling health issues for several years.  He was 84.

Tarkanian won 729 games at Long Beach State, UNLV and Fresno State.  He also won a $2.5 million dollar settlement from the NCAA, who he said tried to run him out of coaching for years.

He was elected to the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2013.
