San Francisco 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks has been fined nearly $16,000 for his unnecessary roughness penalty on Drew Brees, according to a report on espn.com.

The controversial penalty came in the fourth quarter and negated and sack and a fumble.  The Saints went on to tie the game on that possession on a field goal by Garrett Hartley.

Hartley's third field goal of the game was the winner for the Saints 23-20.

On NFL Monday Night Countdown one day later, former Baltimore Ravens' star Ray Lewis issued a scathing indictment of the league rules and offered to pay one half of Brooks' fine if one was levied.

On Tuesday, the NFL Vice President of officiating Dean Blandino said the officials got the call right.
