Yale quarterback Patrick Witt may face an interesting dilemma in a couple of weeks: choosing between a chance to beat archrival Harvard on the football field and a shot at one of the most prestigious academic awards in the world.

Witt, who transferred from Nebraska to Yale to pursue his academic endeavors, was recently notified that he is a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship, which funds three years of study at the University of Oxford for just 80 scholars from around the world (32 from America). However, his finalist interview is scheduled for November 19, the same day as The Game between Harvard and Yale, the nation’s second-oldest continuous rivalry. He is hoping to work with the Rhodes Committee to schedule his interview at a time that would allow him to catch a flight back in time for the game, but it is still unknown if that will work out.

Three years ago, Florida State safety Myron Rolle was in a similar situation. At that time, the NCAA granted a waiver that allowed Rolle to fly on a private plane from his interview in time for the second half of the Seminoles’ game at Maryland.

Witt, who is a history major with a 3.91 GPA, hopes to study international relations at Oxford.
