Governor John Bel Edwards and local, state and national law enforcement agencies talked for over 50 minutes in their latest press conference, which began just after 2 PM Monday.

During the press conference, we learned three important things:

  • The shooter, Gavin Long, was armed with 3 guns during the ambush on law enforcement officers.
  • The shot that killed Long came from over 100 yards away by a member of the Baton Rouge Police Department SWAT Team.
  • East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's deputy Nick Tullier was shot in the head and the stomach as he continues to "fight for his life" while in critical condition.

Among the highlights from the press conference, Baton Rouge Mayor-President Kip Holden shared that mayors from across the nation have been calling him to offer support and assistance. Louisiana State Police Colonel Mike Edmonson walked everyone through what happened Sunday with surveillance video of Gavin Long hunting down the police officers. And Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie showed great emotion when expressing pride in his officers and in pointing out how their "militarized tactics" saved lives.
