Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun women's basketball team extended their season-opening win streak to six games on Saturday afternoon, after downing the Southern-New Orleans Lady Knights, 58-52, in non-conference action at the Cajundome.
The 6-0 start for Louisiana matches the 1983-84 squad for the best start in program history.
The first half was close throughout, but Southern-New Orleans took a one-point, 26-25 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Southern-New Orleans out-shot Louisiana in the first half, 36%-32%, but the Cajuns ended the half with a 25-17 rebounding advantage.
Simone Fields led the Cajuns over the first 20 minutes, with 7 points, while paced the Lady Knights were paced by Brandy Broome, also with 8 points.
The Cajuns led, 44-43, with 6:30 to go, before scoring 6 of the next 8 points, to take a 52-45 advantage with 3:44 remaining.
That proved to be the game-clinching run, as UL went on to the six-point win.
Louisiana ended up being out-shot by Southern-New Orleans from the field, 42%-35%, but the Cajuns finished with a 50-36 rebound advantage, while forcing 25 turnovers
Jasmine Mills Veal led the way for the Cajuns, finishing with 12 points and 8 rebounds, while Fields added 11 points and 7 boards.
In a losing cause for the Lady Knights, Breanna Wiley finished with a game-high 15 points.
With the victory, Louisiana improed to 6-0 on the year, while Southern-NewOrleans fell to 5-3.
The Cajuns return to action on Wednesday morning, when they play host to Mississippi St. in a non-conference tilt beginning at 11 am. `
