UL Women Down Georgia St., 56-49
Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun women's basketball team closed out their 2015-2016 regular season schedule with a victory of Saturday, defeating the Georgia Southern Panthers, 56-49, in Sun Belt Conference action at the Cajundome.
The win, which gave Louisiana 20 wins for the second-consecutive season, secured the No. 3 seed in next week's Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
The victory also helped the Cajuns to a regular season sweep of Georgia Southern, after defeating the Eagles, 56-39, back in January in Statesboro, Georgia.
Louisiana led for all but 1:32 of the contest and never trailed, with their largest lead being 25 points (49-24), at the :57 mark of the third quarter.
The Cajuns led at halftime, 31-20, outshooting Georgia Southern from the field, 36%/35%, while forcing 15 first half turnovers.
Kia Wilrdige paced the Cajuns over the first 20 minutes, scoring 10 points, to go along with 6 rebound and 3 assists, while Angel McGowan had 10 points and 6 rebounds for the Eagles.
Georgia Southern ended the game outshooting Louisiana from the field, 40%/39%, but the Cajuns outrebounded the Eagles, 35-30, while forcing 18 turnovers.
Keke Veal led the way for Louisiana, scoring 17 points, while Wilridge added 12.
In a losing cause for Georgia Southern, McGowan finished with a game-high 19 points, while Patrice Butler chipped in with 12.
With the victory, the Cajuns improved to 20-9, overall, and 13-7 in Sun Belt Conference play, while Georgia Southern fell to 7-22, and 4-16, respectively.
Louisiana, the No. 3 seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, 6th-seeded UT Arlington on Wednesday, March 9 at 7:30 at Lakefront Arena in New Orleans.
