UL Softball Wins Two On Second Day Of Gulf Coast Classic

The 24th-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun softball team captured to win in the second day of the Gulf Coast College Classic in Gulfport, Mississippi on Saturday, defeating the Chattanooga Mocs, 6-2, before downing the Ohio Bobcats 3-1.
The two wins move UL’s record in the tournament to a perfect 4-0.
In the first game, against Chattanooga, Louisiana scored a run in the third inning, when Hayley Hayden walked with two outs, stole second, and then scored on a single off the bat of Lexie Elkins, making it 1-0.
After Chattanooga scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the third, to take a 2-1 lead, the Cajuns retook the lead in the top half of the fourth, when Kelsey Vincent smashed a two-run homer, giving UL a 3-2 advantage.
Louisiana added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh, as they went on to the 4-run win.
Sara Corbello and Elkins the way for the Cajuns offensively, with each going 3-for-4, with two runs batted in.
Christina Hamilton (5-1) recorded the win in relief of starter Macey Smith, allowing only one hit and a walk, while striking out eight, in four innings of work.
With the win, Louisiana improved to 11-5-1, while Chattanooga fell to (10-8)..
In the Ohio game, Louisiana scored an unearned run in the bottom of third, before Ohio answered with an unearned run of their own in the top of the fourth, to tie the game, 1-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Natalie Fernandez led off with a single, before Elkins crushed a two-run homer, one batter later, giving the Cajuns a 3-1 lead, one they would not relinquish.
Jordan Wallace (6-1) picked up the win, striking out 11.
With the win, Louisiana improved to 13-5-1 on the year, while Ohio fell to 12-5.
The Cajuns will play their final game in the tournament on Sunday morning at 10:30 am when they take on the Memphis Tigers.
