UL senior outfielder Shelbi Redfearn

 

The 24th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajun softball team won a pair of games in the first day of play in the Gulf Coast Softball Classic in Gulfport, Mississippi on Friday, defeating the UTSA Roadrunners, 6-2, before knocking off the 12th-ranked Baylor Bears, 11-10.

In the first game against UTSA, Sara Corbello went 3-for-3, including a home run, and Hayley Hayden also homered, as Louisiana outhit UTSA, 11-5.

Christina Hamilton improved to 4-1, pitching a complete-game five-hitter, while striking out a season-high 14 batters.

With the win, the Cajuns improved to 10-5-1, while the Roadrunners fell to 7-9.

In the Baylor game, Louisiana jumped out to a 9-2 lead, courtesy of two Shelbi Redfearn home runs, including a three-run shot, as well as a grand slam, and hung on for the 11-10 win in the slug fest.

Jordan Wallace struck out Justine Young in the bottom of the seventh, with a 3-2 pitch, and the bases loaded, to secure the one-run win.

Redfearn finished withe two homers and seven RBI's against her former school, while Victoria Brown (2-1) pitched three innings of relief to record the win.

With the win, the Cajuns improved to 11-5-1, while Baylor fell to 12-4.

Louisiana plays twice on Saturday, taking on Chattanooga at 2:30 pm, before facing Ohio at 5:30 pm.
