Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns softball team ran their season-long win streak to 14 game game on Wednesday night, after sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from the Houston Cougars at Lamson Park.

Louisiana won the first game, 9-1, in five-inning, mercy-rule fashions, before taking the second game, 10-5.

Senior shortstop Nerissa Myers got the Cajuns off to a quick start in the opener, homering in the bottom half of the first inning, and after two more runs crossed the plate, UL led, 3-0.

Senior catcher Sarah Draheim extended the Louisiana lead in the bottom of the third inning, blasting her 11th homer of the year, making the score 4-0.

Houston third baseman Holly Anderson got the Cougars one run closer in the top of the fourth, hitting a solo home run, but the Cajuns came back with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, thanks in part to two more RBI’s by Draheim, who had four in the game, giving UL the mercy-rule win.

Draheim finished the opener going 3-for-3, with two runs scored, a home run, and four RBI’s, while third baseman Natalie Fernandez picked up a couple of hits in a 10-hit Louisiana offensive attack.

Sophomore Jordan Wallace (20-6) got the win, allowing the one run, on only two hits, withe three walks, and ten strikeouts, while Diedre Outon (7-5) got hit with the loss for Houston.

In the nightcap cap, it was the Cougars jumping on top early, as catcher Haley Outon nailed a three-run homer in the top half of the first inning, to take a 3-0 lead.

The Cajuns came right back to tie it in the bottom half of the inning, however, courtesy of a solo home run by senior outfielder Brianna Cherry, and a two-run shot by freshman outfielder Shellie Landry.

Senior first baseman Matte Haack gave Louisiana their first lead of the second game, with a two-run single in the bottom half of the second inning, making it 5-3, UL.

The scored stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Cajuns put up a five spot, with the highlight of the inning being a solo home run by Landry, her second of the game, extending their lead to 10-3.

Houston scored two more runs in the top half of inning number six, but it was far too little, too late, and the Cajuns completed the doubleheader sweep.

Landry finished the second game going 2-for-4, with the two home runs, and four RBI’s, while Cherry went 3-for-4, with the homer, three runs scored, and two RBI’s.

Junior Kristen Martinez (3-3) was credited with the win in relief, while Julana Shrum (2-2) suffered the loss.
