The 19th-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun softball team racked-up two more wins on Friday, in the first day of play in the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational at Lamson Park.

Louisiana defeated the Alcorn St. Braves. their first game of the day, 8-0, in 5-inning mercy-rule fashion, before downing the North Dakota St. Bison, 8-2, in their second game of the day.

The two victories pushed the Cajuns’ current win streak to three games, in the 16th and 17th games of a season-opening 23-game homestand.

In the opener, Louisiana got on the scoreboard first, plating two runs in the bottom half of the first inning, including a solo home run off the bat of DJ Sanders, her 7th of the season, to take a quick 2-0 lead.

The Cajuns added another run in the bottom half of the second inning, when Lexie Comeaux doubled, and later scored on the backend of a double steal, to make it 3-0.

UL put up three more runs in the bottom half of the third inning, including an RBI single by Daniella Chavez, a sacrifice-fly by Kelli Martinez, and a bases loaded walk by Comeaux, to extend their advantage to 6-0.

Louisiana put the game away in the bottom half of the 4th inning, scoring two runs, courtesy of back-to-back homers from Sanders, her second of the game, and her 8th of the season, and Chavez, her third of the season, to make it 8-0.

That was all that the Cajuns would need, as they went on to the 8-run, 5-inning, mercy-rule triumph.

Louisiana, who outhit Alcorn St., 8-6, was led at the plate by Sanders, who homered twice, her second-consecutive multi-homer contest, and Chavez, who homered, while collecting three hits.

Macey Smith (3-1) recorded the win in the circle for the Cajuns, allowing 0 runs on 4 hits in 4 innings of work.

Jazmin Castillo (1-3) suffered the loss for Alcorn St., allowing 5 hits and 6 runs over 2 innings.

With the triumph, Louisiana improved to 12-4, while Alcorn St. slipped to 8-5.

In the second game Louisiana jumped on top early, scoring getting a solo home run by Grmillion, her first of the season, in the top half of the first inning, to take a quick 3-0 lead.

The Cajuns added four more runs on four hits in the top of the 3rd inning, when Hayley Hayden Aleah Craighton, and Beth Ashley drove home runs, to widen their lead to 5-0.

North Dakota St. scored their run in the top half of the 5th inning, when Tabby Heinz delivered a two-out single, scoring Zoe Stavrou with an unearned run, to trim the deficit to 5-1.

UL got the run back in the top half of the 5th inning, when Comeaux crushed a solo homer, her second of the season, to extend their lead to 6-1.

Louisiana added an insurance run in the top half of the 6th inning, when Hayden drove home Kelli Martinez with a sacrifice-fly, to make it 7-1.

The Bison scored their final run of the game in the bottom half of the 6th inning, when Stavrou homered, her 4th of the season, to cut the UL lead to 7-2.

Louisiana added a final insurance run in the top half of the 7th inning, when Kassidy Zeringue drove home a run with a two-out single, to make it 8-2.

That would be more than enough, as the Cajuns they on to the 6-run victory.

Louisiana, who outhit North Dakota St., 10-8, was paced at the plate by Gremillion and Comeaux, who both homered, while Gremillion, Comeaux, and Martinez each collected two hits apiece, and Hayden drove in three runs.

Alyssa Denham (5-1) picked-up the win in the circle for the Cajuns, allowing 8 hits and one earned run over 7 innings of work.

Jaqueline Sertic (3-9) suffered the loss for North Dakota St., allowing 8 runs on 10 hits in 7 innings.

With the victory, Louisiana improved to 13-4 on the young season, while North Dakota St. slipped to 4-12.

The Cajuns play twice more on Saturday, taking on North Dakota St. at 2 o'clock, before facing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 4:30 pm.
