UL Softball Rolls Past James Madison, 9-1, In NFCA Leadoff Classic

The 12th-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun softball team wrapped-up play in the 17th annual Leadoff Classic on Sunday, by capturing an impressive, 9-1, mercy-rule win over the James Madison Dukes, in Clearwater, Florida.

Louisiana struck first, as Matte Haack led off the second inning with a double, before Shellie Landry blasted a two-run home run, making it 2-0, Cajuns.

The Cajuns added another run in the fourth inning, when Leandra Maly and Landry teamed up on a double steal, with Landry stealing home on the back end, giving them a 3-0 advantage.

After James Madison scored an unearned run in the fifth, cutting the Louisiana lead to 3-1, the Cajuns answered with four of their own in the inning, highlighted by a Landry two-run homer, her second of the game, making it 7-1, Cajuns.

The Cajuns then added two more runs in the home half of the sixth, and came away with the mercy-rule win.

Landry led Louisiana at the plate, going 3-for-3, with two homers, four RBI’s, and a stolen base.

Jordan Wallace (8-1) recorded the win for the Cajuns, allowing no earned runs, while walking one, and striking out four in her six innings of work.

With the win, Louisiana improved to 12-2 on the season, while James Madison fell to 7-3.

The Cajuns, along with DePaul, Michigan, UCF, and Michigan finished the tournament with identical 4-1 records to lead the way.

Louisiana returns to action on Tuesday night, hosting Southern, at 7 o’clock at Lamson Park.
