UL Softball Named Number Six National Seed [Video]

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajun softball team was tabbed the #6-overall national seed in the 2014 NCAA Softball Championships on Sunday night.

Louisiana, who will be playing in their 16th-consecutive NCAA Regional, as well as their 24th in the last 25 years, have qualified for the NCAA Super Regionals the last two years, including three of the last four years, and four of the last six.

The Cajuns will be the top seed in the Lafayette, La. Regional, which will also feature the Texas Longhorns, the Mississippi St. Bulldogs, and the Texas Southern Tigers.

Play will begin on Friday in the double-elimination tournament, with Texas taking on Mississippi St. at 3 pm, followed by Louisiana meeting Texas Southern at 6 o’clock.

Louisiana, 44-8-1 on the season, won both the Sun Belt Conference regular season title, as well as the postseason Sun belt Conference Tournament.

Texas, a member of the Big XII, finished 33-21 on the season.

Mississippi St., out of the SEC, will come into the regional with an overall record of 38-19.

Texas Southern, who won the SWAC postseason tournament, will bring an overall record of 31-18 into the event.

If the Cajuns win the regional next weekend, they would advance to host the first Super Regional in the history of the program.

UL head softball coach Michael Lotief talked about his team being named the first national seed in program history:

UL senior second baseman Natalie Fernandez, one of only two seniors on this year’s squad, spoke about the excitement of the day:
