Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajun softball team had their 2016 season come to an end on Friday, after falling to the Oklahoma Sooners, 7-6, in NCAA Super Regional action at Marita Hynes Field at the OU Softball Complex in Norman, Oklahoma.

Oklahoma, who extended their current win streak to 27 games, used three multi-run innings, two homers, and the stellar pitching of ace left-hander Paige Porter to help them to the 6-run victory.

The win gives the Sooners, the #3 National Seed, a 2-0 win over the 14th-seeded Cajuns in the best-of-three games series, after winning 8-2 in game one of the series on Thursday.

Oklahoma, who appeared in their 7th-consecutive Super Regional, now advances to play in the 2016 Women’s College World Series, scheduled to begin next week in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, for the 10th time program history, the first time since 2014, and the fifth time in the last six years.

Louisiana, who was appearing in their 5th-straight Super Regional, and 7th in the last 9 years, will have to wait at least another year to make an appearance in the WCWS, with their last being back in 2014.

Oklahoma got on the scoreboard first, scoring three runs in the top half of the second inning, all with two outs, courtesy of run-scoring singles by Kady Self and Lea Wodach, as well as an unearned run, giving them a quick 3-0 lead.

Louisiana trimmed to deficit to one run, after scoring two runs in the bottom half of the third inning, when senior first baseman Kelsey Vincent singled home a run, followed by a sacrifice fly ball off of sophomore centerfielder Aleah Craighton, to make it 3-2.

The Cajuns tied it in the bottom half of the fourth inning, when senior designated player Sara Corbello crushed a solo home run, her 13th of the season, to left-centerfield, making the score 3-3.

The Sooners regained the lead in top half of the 5th inning, when third baseman Sydney Romero smashed a solo homer, her 8th of the season, giving them a 4-3 advantage.

Oklahoma added two more runs in the top half of the 6th inning, when Shay Knighten delivered a clutch two-out, 2-run single, giving the Sooners 5 runs with two outs in the game, and a 6-3 lead.

The Sooners put up another insurance run in the top half of the 7th inning, when Wodach tripled home Nicole Pendley, giving them a 7-3 lead.

The Cajuns, refusing to give in, got a 3-run homer from Vincent in the bottom half of the 7th inning, to get within one run, 7-6, and later brought the potential winning run to the plate.

It wasn't meant to be however, as Oklahoma held on for the one-run win, and the Super Regional crown.

Oklahoma, who outhit Louisiana, 12-9, was led at the plate by Romero, who went 3-for-4, to go along with a homer and a run batted in, Kelsey Arnold, who went 2-for-2, and Wodach, who went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI's.

In a losing cause for Louisiana, senior catcher Lexie Elkins, who went 2-for-4, Vincent, who went 3-for-3, to go along with a homer and 4 RBI's, and Corbello, who also homered.

Parker (33-3) recorded the win in the circle for the Sooners, allowing 6 runs on 9 hits, while striking out 2, to go along with 4 walks.

Junior right-hander Alex Stewart (29-6) suffered the loss for the Cajuns, allowing 7 runs on 12 hits in 7 innings of work.

With the victory, Oklahoma improved to 52-7, while Louisiana ended their season with an overall record of 46-9.
