The 15th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajun softball team won their 2013 home opener on Wednesday night, defeating the Mississippi St. Bulldogs, 9-1, in six-inning, mercy rule fashion, at Lamson Park.

Mississippi St. got on the board first, courtesy of a solo home run by centerfielder Jessica Offutt in the top of the third inning, making it 1-0, Bulldogs.

Louisiana responded with four runs of their own in the third inning, with the highlight of the inning coming on a three-run homer by first baseman Matte Haack, giving the Cajuns a 4-1 lead.

Outfielder Shellie Landry belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, extending the Cajuns lead to 6-1.

Louisiana then ended things in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs, with Haack doubling home two runs, giving the Cajuns the 8-run mercy rule win.

Haack led Louisiana at the plate, with the homer, and five RBI's, while Landry and outfielder Brianna Cherry also collected two hits apiece.

Sophomore Jordan Wallace recorded the win for the Cajuns, scattering six hits, while striking out 12 batters over six innings, and improving her season record to 3-0, while Kylie Vry (0-1), suffered the loss for Mississippi St.

With the win, Louisiana improved to 3-1 on the season, while Mississippi St. fell to 3-2.

The Cajuns return to action on Saturday, when they take on Mississippi Valley St. in the opening day of the 2013 Louisiana Classics Tournament.
