Chael Sonnen squared off against Anderson Silva in one of the most anticipated rematches in UFC history at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada last Saturday night. Missed the fights? Read on for the highlights.

Anderson Silva (32-4) vs. Chael Sonnen (27-12)

Sonnen landed a quick takedown in the first round, and controlled the action, landing strikes in a way that was reminiscent of their first battle. In the second stanza, however, Silva landed a knee to the body and followed it up with some ground-and-pound for a TKO victory at just 1:55 into the second round.

Forrest Griffin (19-7) vs. Tito Ortiz (16-11-1)

Tito Ortiz was unsuccessful in his retirement bout. Despite some decent takedowns, Griffin won the best of the striking exchanges and ultimately outpointed the Team Punishment representative, who won only the last round in the bout. It would’ve been nice to see Ortiz finish his career with a win, but it was not in the cards.

Cung Le (8-2) vs. Patrick Cote (17-8)

Although he was too tired for a celebratory backflip after the bout, Cung Le scored a decisive unanimous decision victory over Patrick Cote with a series of snappy kicks and punces. Le ate some punches, too, but managed to keep his wits about him, even landing some takwdowns in the final stanza.

Don Hyung Kim (15-2-1) vs. Demian Maia (16-4)

The fight was over as quickly as it began. BJJ phenom Demian Maia shot for a takedown and ate some hammerfists, but managed to get  Kim’s back and then take him down and transition to mount. Kim, who appeared to suffer from a rib injury, also suffered a TKO defeat just 47 seconds into the round.

Chad Mendes (11-1) vs. Cody McKenzie (13-2)

It didn’t take long for Team Alpha Male representative Chad “Money” Mendes to catch a kick from Cody McKenzie, counter it with a shot to the liver, take the fight to the ground and finish it with strikes… 31 seconds, to be precise…

Ivan Menjivar (24-8) vs. Mike Easton (12-1)

Mike Easton used his size and reach advantage to eek out a decision victory versus Tristar Gym product Ivan Menjivar in a less-than-riveting back-and-forth bout.

Gleison Tibau (25-8) vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov (18-0)

It wasn’t the most exciting fight, but Nurgmagomedov managed to tie Tibau up in the clinch, land a sweet knee to the face and ultimately establish cage control, winning a controversial decision victory over Gleison Tibau and advancing to 18-0.

Melvin Guillard (30-10-2) vs. Fabricio Camoes (14-7-1)

Guillard’s speed was too much for Fabricio Camoes, as he scrambled out of bad positions, landed flurries of punches and even showcased some submission defense in his unanimous decision victory.

Constantinos Philippou (11-2) vs Riki Fukuda (18-6)

Despite relentless takedown attempts by Riki Fukuda, Philippou put on a striking clinic and even came back with a vengeance from a horrendous eyepoke for a 30-27 unanimous decision victory.

John Alessio (35-15) vs Shane Roller (10-7)

Shane Roller ended his 3 fight losing streak, deflecting Alessio’s strikes, landing a slam takedown, getting back mount in two separate instances and landing heavy strikes from that position, winning the bout 29-28 due to superior wrestling.

Raefello Oliveira (15-5) vs Yoislandy Izquierdo (6-2)

Izquierdo was dominant on the feet, using his southpaw stance to connect with left body kicks and straight lefts, but Oliveira utilized some beautiful takedowns to get the fight to the mat. Izquierdo was squirmy and easily defended Oliveiras submission attempts (mostly Americanas), but the BJJ black belt controlled the fight on the ground, winning 2 out of 3 rounds on the judge’s scorecards.
