Jim Tressel, whose Ohio State football teams have won six consecutive Big 10 titles, has resigned as fallout continues from his failure to be truthful with the NCAA about improper benefits to players.

Tressel, who had already been suspended for the first five games of the season, was 106-22 in his career with the Buckeyes.

But Tressel had come under fire after it was revealed that he knew about five Ohio State players receiving improper benefits for the selling of memorabilia and then lied about it, including signing an affidavit saying that he did not know of any NCAA violations in his program.

Luke Fickell, who had already been named to coach the team in Tressel's absence during the first five games, has been named interim coach.
