The home town hero in Cincinnati, Todd Frazier, won the most exciting Home Run Derby in recent memory. Good job, MLB.

Sometimes change is unnecessary. Baseball has been guilty of trying to shake things up just for the sake of television. Usually it flops, but this new format led to some real deal entertainment. Frazier won the Derby with a walk-off in the final seconds in front of his home fans.

Frazier not only eliminated former champ Prince Fielder from the tournament format, he claimed his final victory over the impressive rookie slugger from Los Angeles, Joc Pederson. It looked like Pederson had it in the bag after cranking 14 home runs in the final round, along with posting the longest home run (487 feet) of the day. Frazier put an end to that though, and he had a family member on the mound.

His brother, Charlie, was tossing the baseballs to him, and it led to a nice family moment for his mother, father and loved ones in attendance.

It was almost too good to believe. Frazier hit 39 home runs through three rounds, but the change in the format made you care less about the total and more about the competition.

Frazier took away the belt, but the night provided a lot of smiles for many people. Cincinnati celebrates for their guy, the Los Angeles Dodgers fill the champagne glasses for their talented rookie home run machine, and Albert Pujols can sleep well at night knowing he can still hang with the young bucks.

After years of boring results, the Home Run Derby delivered. Is this the format our kids will grow up remembering? Probably.
