1947 — Columbia upset Army, 21-20, at Baker Field in New York to break the Cadets’ 32-game NCAA football unbeaten streak. (More info.)

1978 — Gaylord Perry of the San Diego Padres became the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in both leagues. (More info.)

1986 — Mookie Wilson’s grounder went through the legs of first baseman Bill Buckner and plated the winning run, as the New York Mets rallied for three runs with two outs in the 10th inning for a 6-5 win against the Boston Red Sox in Game 6 of the World Series at Shea Stadium. (More info.)

1987 — The Minnesota Twins beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-2, in Game 7 at the Metrodome and won their first World Series championship. (More info.)

1990 — Evander Holyfield won the world heavyweight boxing title by knocking out James (Buster) Douglas in the third round of their fight in Las Vegas. (More info.)
