Here are just some of the notable sports moments that happened on October 22:

1939 — The Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Eagles, 23-14, at Ebbets Field in the first NFL game ever broadcast on television. (More info.)

1972 — The Oakland Athletics defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 3-2, in Game 7 of the World Series at Riverfront Stadium to win their first of three consecutive world championships. (More info.)

1997 — Janet Jones, wife of hockey great Wayne Gretzky, was knocked unconscious after a piece of plexiglass fell on her during one of her husband’s games at Madison Square Garden. (More info.)

2000 — Corey Dillon of the Cincinnati Bengals ran for 278 yards to set the NFL single-game rushing mark in a 32-21 win over the Denver Broncos at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati. (More info.)

2000 — After beaning New York Met Mike Piazza in the head during the regular season, Roger Clemens of the New York Yankees threw the barrel of Piazza’s broken bat at him after a foul ball in Game 2 of the World Series. Benches cleared, but there were no ejections during the Yankees’ 6-5 victory at Yankee Stadium. (More info.)
