1890 — American John Owen Jr. became the first amateur to run the 100-yard dash in under 10 seconds. (More info.)

1959 — NFL Commissioner Bert Bell died of a heart attack during a Philadelphia Eagles game at Franklin Field. (More info.)

1967 — Carl Yastrzemski, Reggie Smith and Rico Petrocelli of the Red Sox hit consecutive home runs in Game 6 of the World Series, as Boston beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 8-4, to force a seventh game. (More info.)

1972 — Johnny Bench of the Reds hit a game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth inning in decisive game of the National League Championship Series. Cincinnati beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-3, at Riverfront Stadium. (More info.)
