1917 — Four pro hockey teams — the Ottawa Senators, Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers and the Toronto Arenas — met to discuss forming the National Hockey League. (More info.)

1950 — In the era prior to the 24-second shot clock, the Fort Wayne Pistons beat the Minneapolis Lakers, 19-18, in the lowest scoring game in NBA history. (More info.)

1965 — Muhammad Ali scored a technical knockout of Floyd Patterson in the 12th round of their fight in Las Vegas to retain the heavyweight title. (More info.)

1981 — Tight end Kellen Winslow of the San Diego Chargers caught an NFL record-tying five touchdown passes in a 55-21 win over the Oakland Raiders. (More info.)

1986 — Mike Tyson knocked out Trevor Berbick in the second round of their fight in Las Vegas and became the youngest heavyweight boxing champ in history at 20 years, 4 months and 22 days-old. (More info.)
