1924 — The Boston Bruins, the first U.S. franchise in the National Hockey League, was founded. (More info.)

1938 — Seabiscuit beat reigning Triple Crown winner War Admiral in a match race at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. (More info.)

1951 – Roy Campanella of the Brooklyn Dodgers won the first of his three National League Most Valuable Player awards. (More info.)

1959 — After being hit in the face by a shot at Madison Square Garden, Jacques Plante of the Montreal Canadiens returned from intermission wearing a mask, the first goalie ever to do so. (More info.)

2001 — Scott Brosius of the Yankees hit a two-out, game-tying home run in the ninth-inning off Byung Hyun Kim of the Diamondbacks at Yankee Stadium the night after teammate Tino Martinez had done the same thing, and New York beat Arizona 3-2 in 11 innings to take a three-games to two lead in the World Series.
