1890 — Bantamweight fighter George Dixon became the first black boxing champion by knocking out Nunc Wallace of England in the 18th round of their fight in London, England. (More info.)

1914 — Jack Johnson beat Frank Moran in 20 rounds at the Bicycle Velodrome in Paris to retain the heavyweight boxing title. (More info.)

1963 — Philadelphia Phillies’ slugger Johnny Callison hit for the cycle in a 13-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. (More info.)

1972 — Left-wing Bobby Hull of the Chicago Blackhawks left the NHL for the fledgling World Hockey Association’s Winnipeg Jets. (More info.)
