1900 — In the first-ever Davis Cup tennis competition, Malcolm Whitman, Holcombe Ward and Dwight Davis (the Cup’s namesake) of the United States defeated Britain, 3-0, at the Longwood Cricket Club near Boston. (More info.)

1925 — Suffering from a sore back, Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees was removed for a pinch-hitter, Bobby Veach, for the only time in his career. (More info.)

1936 — As part of the United States’ 4×100-meter relay team, Jesse Owens won his fourth gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. (More info.)

1946 — For the first time in history, all scheduled Major League Baseball games were played at night. (More info.)

1971 — Pitcher Satchel Paige, who spent the prime of his career in the Negro leagues, was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. (More info.)

1975 — The Houston Oilers beat the New Orleans Saints, 13-7, in a preseason contest that was the first NFL game played in the Louisiana Superdome. (More info.)
