Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship Set For Day Two Action

Four teams remain, as day two of the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship gets underway on Thursday at Lamson Park, with two games on the schedule.

The tournament now switches to a double-elimination format, until the finals, which are scheduled for Saturday, after four single-elimination games on Wednesday.

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajun softball team, the top-seed in the tournament, will play their first game in the tournament this afternoon, taking on the fourth-seeded WKU Lady Toppers at 5 o’clock.

Louisiana, who finished the regular season at 41-7-1, overall, and 19-1 in Sun Belt Conference play, comes into the tournament riding a 12-game win streak, including wins in 33 of their last 35 games.

The Cajuns, who are hosting the tournament for the fourth time in school history, won their 11th Sun Belt Conference softball regular-season championship in the 13 years of play in the league this year, and are also be hosting as the #1-seed for the third time.

WKU advanced to play on Thursday by defeating eighth-seeded UT-Arlington, 6-1, in an elimination game, on Wednesday.

The Lady Toppers are currently 33-22-1 on the season.

Louisiana swept a three-game series from WKU during the regular season, winning by scores of 8-4, 11-5, and 6-4.

The Louisiana/WKU contest will be preceded by a match-up between second-seeded South Alabama and sixth-seeded ULM at 2 o’clock.

The Jaguars, who won the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Championship, is 38-11 on the season, while the Warhawks, who advanced by defeating Troy, 3-2, in one elimination game, before defeating Georgia St., 2-1, in another on Wednesday, is currently 24-25.

South Alabama swept a three-game series from ULM during the regular season, winning by scores of 2-0, 7-1, and 7-0.

The winners of the two games advance to play each other at 2 pm on Friday, while the two losers will square off in an elimination game at 11 am on Friday.
