Any New Orleans Saints fan has chanted "Who Dat" many times. How did the famous chant come to be?

I've heard tons of stories over the years.

The term "Who Dat" began in the 19th centry in vaudeville acts and minstrel shows, according to Wikipedia.

Alumni of Patterson and St. Augustine claim the chant began in the early 80s on as a rallying cry for their football teams.

Of course today, "Who Dat!?" is most commonly associated with the Saints.
