Spartans Look To Keep 2013 Success Rolling Into New Season

A winning season. Check!

A berth in the playoffs. Check!

2013 saw much success for Comeaux High. It was a season which saw the Spartans not only achieve a winning record in one of the toughest districts in the state (4-3 in District 3-5A), but it culminated in them making it back to the playoffs after not being a part of the postseason for the past few seasons.

Some key players graduated last season in quarterback Jacob Pecoraro and running back Aikeem Jones, as well as most of the defense. But returning starters in the secondary and a playmaker in Hunter Register at wide receiver has the school more excited about its team now than over the past couple of seasons.

"We had a tremendous senior class last year that showed a lot of leadership," says Comeaux Head Coach Kevin Magee, who referred the great participation and preparation as big reasons why last year's team was as successful as it was. He talked about the carryover from last season going into 2014.

"The summer program went well again this year. We had great, great participation and the percentage of kids that got in all of their workouts was on about the same par as the year before."

Offensively, Coach Magee is replacing Pecoraro, who he described as "a student of the game" with a sophomore Tanarious Achan. He points out his young QB will have to go through "some growing pains" but says his tremendous athleticism, hard work and understanding of the offense led to him being "the man for us."

In addition to Register's return to the Spartans, two other key pieces of Comeaux's Wing-T offense will come back - fullbacks Scottie Thibodaux and Kasey Toups - as well as other veteran players.

On the O-line, they have quite a few players who started in positions different than where they will start this season. Coach Magee says they are trying to develop depth in that area.

On defense, in addition to the experience coming back in the secondary, Coach Magee is excited to finally have some size on his defensive line, which he says averages about 215 pounds, which is the biggest since he has been there. His linebacking corps will be completely new, though, after all three starters from last season's team have graduated.

So, how can the Spartans keep 2013's success rolling into 2014?

"I just think the biggest thing is that the kids that were part of the team last year realized the little things that need to be done in order to be successful. Hopefully, that'll carry over into this year's team. This district...is a tough game every week."
