The Southern Miss Golden Eagles used two big swings of the bat to score five runs in the fifth inning and went on to defeat the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns 7-2 Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg, MS.

Tim Lynch blasted a three run homer and Chase Scott hit a two run shot two batters later to lead Southern Miss (30-12) to the win before 3,645 fans.

"We missed on two pitches and they got five runs off it," head coach Tony Robichaux said.  "But that's what they do in this ball park.  We knew coming in we'd have to score runs to stay with them and we just left too many men on base.  But if we aren't going to hit, then we have to pitch well.  I thought we did that except for those two pitches."

Louisiana (27-14) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Dylan Poncho and Nick Thurman drew one out walks off starter Stevie Powers.  The runners moved up on a passed  ball before Brad Antchak blooped a double to center field to give the Cajuns a 2-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles got on the board against Cajuns' starter Evan Guillory (4-4) in the third inning when Dylan Burdeaux singled, went to second on Jake Sandlin's single and scored on a base hit by Hunter Slater to cut the Louisiana lead in half.

In the fifth, Burdeaux singled with one out and Sandlin drew a walk.  Lynch then blasted his homer to right field to give the Eagles a 4-2 lead.  After Slater singled, Scott made it 6-2 with a homer to left field.  Southern Miss got its final run in the eighth off reliever Will Bacon on an RBI single by Storme Cooper.

Jake Winston, the second of five Southern Miss pitchers, allowed two hits over 2.1 innings to get the win and run his record to 5-0 on the season.

Burdeaux had three of Southern Miss' ten hits in the contest, while Slater added two.  Kyle Clement was the only Cajun to record a multi hit game, with a double and a single.  The Cajuns stranded twelve baserunners on the night and did not have more than one hit in an inning, finishing with five hits.

The Cajuns will try to get back in the win column Wednesday night when the host Louisiana Tech in the final midweek home game of the season.  Freshman lefty Hogan Harris is expected to get the start for the Cajuns.
