Back on March 1, the Sun Belt Conference announced Idaho and New Mexico State would end their affiliation as football-only members after the 2017 season.

And, since then, speculation has been what the future would be for those two schools.

Idaho President Chuck Staben is reportedly going to make an announcement concerning the future of the football program.  Footballscoop.com is reporting that announcement will be the Vandals are going to drop to the Football Championship Subdivision.

Idaho is already a member of the Big Sky Conference for all sports other than football.  The Big Sky is also an FCS football conference.  This is a move that isn't a surprise.  Geographically, there are no FBS conferences that would have Idaho on its radar, and competing as an independent isn't really an option.

If the report is accurate, the Vandals would be the first individual school to drop from the FBS to the FCS.
