The Southeastern Louisiana Lions have named an Acadiana area native as their new head football coach.

The school tabbed Abbeville native Frank Scelfo as the 16th head football coach in program history on Tuesday.

The 58-year old Scelfo replaces former head coach Ron Roberts, who left to become defensive coordinator for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, after spending six seasons as head man of the Lions.

Southeastern Louisiana, who went 6-5 in 2017, has compiled winning seasons in four of the last five years.

After finishing his playing career at ULM (then Northeast Louisiana) in 1981, Scelfo began his coaching career in the high school ranks in 1982, spending time at such schools as Prairie View Academy, Jesuit, River Oaks, Vidor, Orangefield, Chapel Hill, Kilgore, and Northshore, in both Louisiana and Texas.

In 1996, Scelfo got his first college coaching job at Tulane, where he stayed for 11 seasons, including 8 seasons as offensive coordinator, before becoming the offensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech in 2007.

After three years in Ruston, Scelfo became quarterbacks coach at Arizona in 2010, prior to joining the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars as quarterbacks coach in 2013.

Following three seasons in the NFL, Scelfo headed back to the college ranks, taking the job of offensive coordinator at UTEP, where he spent the last two years.

Scelfo's brother, Chris Scelfo, is the offensive line coach at the University of Houston.
