On the first day of practice at Saints training camp, safety Jairus Byrd wasn't a participant as he's been placed on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list.

Byrd underwent back surgery on May 29th, less than two months after signing a $56 million deal with New Orleans. Byrd's $28 million guaranteed is the most ever for an NFL safety.

Players on the preseason PUP list can be moved to the active roster at anytime during the preseason. How long until Byrd returns to the practice field?

"Sooner rather than later," said Saints head coach Sean Payton yesterday. "Before we leave (West Virginia), he'll be back."

The Saints reported to training camp yesterday, beginning their first of many practices this morning at the Greenbrier resort in White Sulfer Springs, West Virginia.
