Before today, New Orleans Saints prized free agent safety Jairus Byrd had yet to participate at training camp. The All-Pro underwent back surgery in May, and was placed on the PUP list to begin camp.

This morning, Byrd was off the PUP and flying around the practice field at the Greenbrier Resort. Shortly before his return, he sent out the following tweet.

Byrd worked out with the defensive backs in team drills before sitting out first team period. This is normal procedure, as teams ease players back into practice upon their return.

However, Byrd wasn't done. He fielded punts during special team drills, something he's done sparsely in his pro career, only fielding 3 punts for the Buffalo Bills, all of which were fair catches. He did return punts during his collegiate career at Oregon.

Byrd enters the first year of a 6 year, $56 million contract ($28 million guaranteed).

Wide receiver Robert Meachem, who hasn't practiced in several days due to a back issue, returned to practice this morning.

Rookie 6th round pick Tavon Rooks (back) practiced for the first time today as well.

Missing practice was wide receiver Kenny Stills (quad) and defensive tackle John Jenkins (pectoral), who remains on the PUP list.
