Saints’ Payton Is Even Ready To Call Plays Again
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — As Sean Payton enters his first training camp in two years, he says he plans to resume offensive play-calling duties he relinquished in early 2011.
Payton, speaking Thursday evening after players reported for camp, says offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael was "outstanding" in the play-calling role he assumed in the sixth game of the 2011 season, when Payton broke his leg. With Carmichael calling plays most of that season, Drew Brees and the offense set NFL records, including yards passing for a quarterback at 5,476 and total net yards at 7,474. Carmichael also called plays last year, while Payton was suspended in the bounty probe.
However, Payton says play-calling is something he enjoys. Brees says he loves that Payton is "taking the reins" and will be the voice in his ear.
