With the 2016 regular season schedule set to begin this week, talks between the New Orleans Saints and quarterback Drew Brees appear to have heated up.

Pro Football Talk reported on Tuesday that the two sides are close to an agreement that would keep the popular quarterback in New Orleans for a few more years.

The 37-year old Brees is in the final year of a five-year, $100 million contract, and is said to be seeking a 4-year extension in the neighborhood of $100 million.

It may be important for the two sides to come to an agreement in the next 5 days, as Brees has said he will not negotiate once the regular season begins.

A 15-year veteran, Brees has been with the Saints since the 2006 season.

Last season, Brees threw for 4,870 yards and 32 touchdowns.

Over his career, Brees, a 9-time Pro Bowler, has thrown for 60,903 yards and 428 touchdowns.
