CORK, Ireland (AP) — Rory McIlroy has ended months of deliberation by announcing he's going to play for Ireland when golf returns to the Olympics in 2016.

The 25-year-old from Northern Ireland was eligible to play for either Ireland or Britain at the Brazil Olympics. But after playing all of his amateur golf under the auspices of the Dublin-based Golfing Union of Ireland, the McIlroy opted to stay with Ireland.

McIlroy is a former No. 1 ranked player who has two major championships to his credit.
