New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has reportedly agreed to a 5 year extension, but in reality, is a two-year deal worth $44.25 million guaranteed.

Brees will make $20 million this season and $24.25 million next season.

"Both sides are very happy and certainly I'm very happy," said Brees. "I want to play my entire career here...I'll be here as long as they'll have me."

In essence, the deal can be void by either side after two years. If Brees, now 37 years old, continues performing at an all-pro level the next two seasons, he can enter the negotiating table again at 39. If his play begins to regress, the Saints can elect to move on after 2017.

If Brees had played out the final year of his previous contract, he would've either hit the open market next offseason, or been franchise tagged. Under the latter scenario, it would've been the 3rd Franchise Tag of his career, guaranteeing him $43.4 million for a single season.

"I plan to play for longer than 2 yrs, but it was the best interest of team was a two year deal," noted Brees. "The (Saints) cap situation to me was most important element to this, being able to keep and acquire talent."

In 10 seasons as Saints quarterback, Brees has led the offense to a top 10 ranked offense every year.

Already the face of the franchise and best player in team history, a team friendly deal like the one he inked today will do something I didn't think was possible...make the most popular Saints of all-time even more popular.
