A native of Bradenton, Florida, Sandberg chose Auburn over LSU and North Carolina St, while UCF and UCLA also reportedly expressed interest.

Now 23 years old, Sandberg was a member of Mississippi State's 2013 football signing class, before electing to play professional baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies, who selected Sandberg in the third round of the 2013 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.

A lefthander, Sandberg hit a .243 over nearly 500 career minor league games, to go along with 29 home runs and 173 runs batted in.
