The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Chicago Cubs, 2-1, on Monday night, and clinched their first playoff berth in 21 years in the process.

The Pirates, who are 90-67, and tied for second place with the Cincinnati Reds in the National League Central, two games behind the first place St. Louis Cardinals, clinched at least a National League wild card.

Pittsburgh was last in the postseason in 1992, and have since endured 20-consecutive losing seasons, before this year's playoff run.

Starling Marte belted a solo home run in the top half of the ninth inning, to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead, before the Cubs' Nate Schierholtz was thrown out at the plate to end the game.

After the win, the Pirates went watch television, and saw the Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals, 4-3, clinching the playoff spot.
