For years at the trading deadline, the Pittsburgh Pirates have been active participants.

But, for the last twenty years, they've been the ones trading off established players in exchange for prospects.

This year, the Pirates might be buyers, not sellers.

The Pirates sit atop the National League Central Division in the middle of a four-team race.  Milwaukee, St. Louis and Cincinnati are in the mix as well.

Team President Frank Coonelly says the Bucs will be looking to make deals to add players before the July 31 deadline.

While deals may or may not get done, Coonelly says the Pirates will be active participants.  He said the failure to add any players would be because of not being able to make the right deal and not because the Pirates are afraid to add payroll.
