Pirates Select Gerrit Cole With Top Pick, Mahtook Goes to Rays
The Pittsburgh Pirates selected UCLA right-handed pitcher Gerrit Cole, with the first selection of Major League Baseball’s First-Yeal player Draft, on Monday night.
Jenifer Langosch, of mlb.com, reports that LSU outfielder Mikie Mahtook was picked by the Tampa Bay Rays, with the 31st pick of the draft.

Cole had some controls issues, with UCLA, in 2011, but those problems were thought to be mechanical, and he’s expected to rise quickly through the Pittsburgh system.
It was a little surprising to see Mahtook fall to the 31 st pick, but he’s going to an organization that relies on their minor league system to be successful, and we’ll probably see him in the big league in a couple of years.
